A notice sent to Father John that Father John wanted posted:

Friends - The House Judiciary Committee has just voted by a margin of 10-8 to recommend HB 1659 for further legislation. Although this outcome is certainly unfortunate, this vote has no impact on HB 1659, which will die. It also has no bearing on whether assisted suicide legislation will be filed next year (any legislator may file any bill regardless of what the result of an interim study is).

It emerged during the discussions this morning that the vast majority of people who contacted Committee members on this were opposed to assisted suicide. It is clear that the legislators heard from few if any people who supported this. It is also clear that the issues raised by the callers/e-mailers gave pause even to a number of the legislators who ultimately voted to recommend for further legislation.

Next stop on this issue will be the new legislation that will be published sometime in December. We'll keep you in the loop as to developments.

Again, thank you for your great dedication, which for yet another year has helped to protect the people of New Hampshire against the danger of assisted suicide.

A notice sent to Father John that Father John wanted posted:

"Friends - I want to alert you to two upcoming events in the NH House.

The first is next Tuesday, Sep. 1, as the House Judiciary Committee holds a remote work session on HB 1659, the assisted suicide bill. Information on how to attend that hearing remotely may be found on p. 18 of the
current House Calendar.

As you will recall, that bill was sent to interim study, which means that HB 1659 will die with the close of the session in December. All that the Judiciary Committee can do is to vote on whether to recommend for further legislation or not recommend for further legislation. Of course, we are advocating for the latter.

It is not clear whether the public will have an opportunity to speak during this work session. It is also possible that the Committee will vote on the bill at this work session. Accordingly, the only sure opportunity to weigh in is to contact the Committee in advance of the work session. Contact info for the Committee is here. As always, please be kind and respectful in your communications with the members. For a refresher on our position on HB 1659, this is the letter that accompanied our testimony in February.

The other upcoming event will be the convening of the House on Sep. 16 to vote on whether to sustain or override the Governor's vetoes. One of the bills that will be a subject of a vote that day is HB 685, the bill to mandate insurance coverage for abortion. Please contact your House members before the 16th and urge them to vote to sustain the Governor's veto of HB 685. You can find out who your House members are by going here.

Thanks very much. I hope you have a peaceful and happy last few weeks of summer.

Bob"
